Watch: How to make a no-sew, government-approved cloth face mask

Cloth face coverings can help stop the spread of coronavirus and the government recommends wearing them in particular when it is difficult to maintain social distancing.

Transport for London said face masks should be worn on all their public transport services.

You can make your own cloth face mask out of an old t-shirt by watching the video above and following these steps:

Draw a line across the width of the t-shirt 20 cm up from the bottom hem. Cut along this line so you’re left with a snood-type band of material
Mark out a rectangular shape which begins 2 cm from the top and bottom edges of the band, and 15 cm in from one of the outer edges, then cut it out (you can discard this material)
Finally to create the ties, cut open the 2 cm thick bands. Unfold the material and you will have a cloth face mask to cover your nose and mouth, and two pairs of ties to tie around your head and neck.

It’s still important to practice good hygiene and wash your hands regularly, particularly before putting on and after taking off your mask.

You should also wash your cloth face masks regularly – they can go in the wash with your other laundry, using your normal detergent.
